“We are Mayo” book on the market

We are Mayo

An exciting new hardback book entitled “We are Mayo” was launched recently. The book is a joint compilation involving the talents of Sean Rice, a well-known and much respected journalist and Charlestown native Dr. Tommy Brett, a native of Bracklagh, Charlestown, who reached great heights in the area of medicine in Australia where he has been based for many years.

Both men combined their talents to produce a very impressive publication which covers all the facets and genres which make up our great county Mayo. As the title implies, it’s a book that digs deep into the history of a county that has carved significant reputation the world over. We attract thousands of visitors every year who flock to our many tourist attractions with our rivers, lakes, mountains, history, people, sporting heroes and infrastructure carrying wide appeal to so many out there. The book depicts all the aforementioned in minute detail with the images and illustrations magnificently captured which makes it a must read for all Mayo people both home and abroad.

The book was launched on May 2, which was “Mayo Day” with the Covid-19 pandemic putting paid to any plans to host an official launch. Nevertheless the authors pushed ahead with their launch with the book the culmination of many years of painstaking research and investigation which involved countless hours of making contact with Mayo people in their respective work places and areas of interest. They can be proud of their final product which portrays our county in a terrific light and brings our many achievements, attractions and heroes to the attention of a whole new audience.

I would wholeheartedly recommend you buy it with copies currently on sale in a number of outlets in the town with Mahon’s Spar and Mulhearn’s The Candy Store all having copies in stock. The book retails at €30 and it is a bargain at that price as it strives to reach out to the Mayo people, not only living in Ireland and Britain but to the very large diaspora who for one reason have made their lives and living far away from their place of birth. It is a book well worth sourcing and buying and one which gives all Mayo people many reasons to be proud of where we are from.
