The East Mayo Athletic Club held their first 5k summer run on Saturday, June 5, with near neighbours Curry hosting the first event in a series of six. Everything was organised to a tee and hats off to our Curry friends who stepped up to the plate in every way in terms of stewarding and assistance with the route also providing a good test for the large crowd who took part and supported the event with terrific enthusiasm,
The East Mayo Athletics Club thank Curry for their splendid hospitality and support which the club and the organising committee were deeply appreciative of. It was a great morning all round for the athletes and organisers with runners from Mayo AC, Corran AC, Galway City Harriers, Ballina AC, Westport AC, Boyle Athletic Club, Carrick-on-Shannon AC, Swinford AC, Sligo AC, Tireragh AC and Castlerea Crusaders Athletics Club all taking part and lending their support which provided the event with the perfect start and gave it the impetus to move forward with confidence for race two which took place on Saturday, June 12 last.
The following were the first five home in race 1: 1st Ray McNamara (Ballina AC) 17.36; 2nd Alan Dunne (East Mayo Athletics Club) 17.49; 3rd Gerry Kirrane (Mayo AC) 18.32; 4th Anto Devaney (Mayo AC) 18.51; 5th Conor Nally (Club Redders) 19.06. There were some impressive times boosted by those who filled the top five places and it’s onto race two of which there will be a full report of in next week’s column.
