The East Mayo Athletics Club held the third 5k summer run on Saturday, June 19, with the undulations and scenic areas of Carracastle providing a stern test for the large crowd who took part. Conditions were perfect and the committee had everything organised to a tee with the race starting on time at 10am.
It was great to see so many of the participants running in their Colm Horkan Memorial Run t-shirts in memory of the first anniversary of his death which coincided with the run. Hats off to the organisers who left no stone unturned and they were delighted at the turnout and wish to thank all supporters particularly those who came from far and wide. The following were the first three home in race 3; 1st Gerry Kirrane (Mayo AC) 18.12; 2nd Anto Devaney (Mayo AC) 18.25 and 3rd John Fitzmaurice (Roscommon Harriers AC) 18.56.
Honourable mention also to Maura Ginty (Mayo AC) and Paula Donnellan Walsh who were the first two ladies home with both posting cracking times as they flew around the course and set a great standard in the process. It’s onto race 4 which took place in Kilmovee on Saturday, June 26, of which there will be a full report in next week’s column.
