Hats off to the organisers of the inaugural Colm Horkan Memorial Run which captured the hearts and minds of so many people in Ireland and overseas with close to three thousand (3000) people signing up to take part in the virtual event.
Support poured in from across the globe as people took to the roads and the track to complete their chosen distance all of which was done virtually in compliance with all the Covid-19 regulations. The idea was first mooted by the Irish Defence Forces 62nd Infantry Group with the local East Mayo Athletics Club rowing in behind it and from there the whole concept took off as people flocked to commit and participate.
All proceeds from the event were directed towards the Colm Horkan Memorial Fund which is a tremendous legacy and a fitting tribute to a man who brought nothing but good and joy into the lives of many in the community. The amount of people who took part, young and old was astounding with video footage and photographs being posted on to the many social media platforms. There was a huge demand for the medals and t-shirts with the vast majority of the participants signing up for that offer and these are terrific mementoes and ones which will be cherished by all who took part.
The event received wonderful publicity across so many mediums and media outlets and perhaps it might become an annual event as there’s definitely a demand out there for that to happen but for the moment we can bask in the success of the first Colm Horkan Memorial Run and take a bow all those who were so heavily involved in making it happen and bringing it to fruition.
