The East Mayo Athletics Club in liaison with the Charlestown Sarsfields GAA Club are organising a very special Colm Horkan Memorial Run (5km, 10km or half marathon) on Sunday, February 14 alongside the Irish 62nd Infantry who are taking to the roads at their base, Camp Faour in Syria.
The idea for this run stemmed from the members of the Irish 62nd Infantry Group based in Syria. The organisers thank them for their generosity and kindness and really appreciate their noble gesture with all funds going towards the Colm Horkan Memorial Pitch Fund. This is a virtual run, walk, cycle or treadmill challenge and can take place anywhere in the world at your own pace in your own time.
As stated above, all proceeds from both events will go towards the proposed fantastic new development which includes a new all weather floodlit pitch complete with community walkway which will be named in honour of the man who embodied all that was good about our club and community. This development is a fitting legacy as it ensures his name and stature will live on for decades and generations to come as he was one of the good guys who loved his town and had a great sense of place about him. The response to the event has been terrific to date with messages and tweets of support coming from all parts of Ireland and beyond as people are keen to lend and pledge their support for a really good cause.
Everyone who takes part will receive a custom-made medal in memory of Colm. Custom-designed t-shirts are also available to purchase. There are a number of deals available and on offer to the general public which are as follows: Single entry with medal costs €25. Entry with a medal and t-shirt costs €35. Family options are also available the details of which will be disclosed shortly. Book online at popupraces.ie/race/colm-horkan and all support is greatly appreciated with lots of positive vibes and support emanating from all cohorts and walks of life.
Please support and encourage family members and friends to do likewise and give this event the national and international platform it deserves.
