The East Mayo Athletics Club held its second 5k summer run on Saturday, June 12, with the picturesque route of Cloonlyon providing a stern test for the large crowd who took part.
Conditions were ideal and the committee had everything organised to a tee with the race starting on time at 10am. Hats off to the organisers who left no stone unturned and they were delighted at the turnout and wish to thank all who supported particularly those who came from far and wide. The following were the first five home in Race 2: 1st, John Byrne, Mayo AC, 17.26; 2nd, Alan Dunne, East Mayo Athletics Club, 17.45; 3rd, Sara Doohan, Corran AC, 17.53; 4th, Gerry Kirrane, Mayo AC, 18.23; 5th, David Tiernan, East Mayo AC, 18.37.
There were some impressive times posted by those who filled the top five places and it was onto Race 3, which took place in Carracastle on Saturday last, of which there will be a full report of in next week’s column.
Each race must be booked in advance with all races starting at 10am sharp. Registration forms are available 48 hours in advance of each race by checking out the splendid East Mayo Athletics Facebook page. The entry fee for each race is €5 or six races for the price of five if paid in advance. Over-16s only and you can run, walk or jog the 5Km depending on your levels of fitness and stamina.
The next run on the list is scheduled for Kilmovee on Saturday, June 26, and there has been a great response to the initiative with advance bookings going through the roof at the moment as people get out and get active with exercise and its importance becoming a very important part of their daily/weekly activity.
