10km a resounding success

The annual East Mayo Athletics 10km run/walk/jog held in conjunction with the CBD Sports Complex was another rip roaring success with 123 participants taking to the starting line.

The East Mayo Athletics had all bases covered with their organisation top class with an army of volunteers on duty and dispersed at various points on the route making sure everything ran smoothly and all participants got around safely. There were some fantastic times posted by the leading men and women but hats off to all who took part and completed as this was a terrific achievement with many setting personal and seasonal bests as targets were reached and exceeded by many.

The following were the first 3 home in the men’s and women’s sections. In the men’s race first home was Colin Wyss (Stade Geneva, Switzerland) in a fantastic time of 33.18 seconds with Declan Brennan following closely behind in second in 34.35 seconds with Hugh McCardle from the Roscommon Harriers Athletics Club crossing in third in a very good time of 34.46 seconds. The first East Mayo Athletics man to cross the finish line was the ageless David Tiernan who hit the tape in an astounding time of 35.28 as he continues to defy father time and remains in marvellous shape.

In the women’s race first to hit the tape was Elsie Phillips (Swinford Athletics Club) in a very impressive time of 44.30 seconds with Paula Donnellan-Walsh (Mayo AC) hot on her heels in second in an equally impressive time of 44.41 seconds with local lady the indefatigable Trina Tiernan (East Mayo AC) posting a marvellous time of 44.54 in third place which speaks volumes for her fitness levels and stamina.
